Exchanges team at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo has the pleasure to inform you of a new exchange opportunity for high school students. Please share with your contacts and friends, as appropriate. Many thanks for your cooperation.

(1) Youth Leadership Program (High School Students)

The Youth Leadership Program with Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia will support the participation of approximately 24 secondary school students (between the ages of 15 and 17 by April 15, 2012) and educators in a 21-day, U.S.-based exchange on community service, leadership and media literacy. The exchange is expected to take place August 24-September 14, 2012. The exchange will start in Brattleboro, Vermont. The group will then split for home stays in Louisville, Kentucky, and San Diego, California. The groups will return to finish the exchange together in Washington, D.C. Leadership, community service and civic education will be primary program themes, and media literacy and journalism will be a central sub-theme to be used as a lens through which to polish communication skills, problem solving, and team building. In the months that follow their return home, alumni will develop projects that serve the needs of their communities.

(2) Youth Leadership Program (Chaperones)

The Youth Leadership Program with Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia will support the participation of approximately 24 secondary school students and educators in a 21-day, U.S.-based exchange on community service, leadership and media literacy. The exchange is expected to take place August 24-September 14, 2012. The exchange will start in Brattleboro, Vermont. The group will then split for home stays in Louisville, Kentucky, and San Diego, California. The groups will return to finish the exchange together in Washington, D.C. Students (between the ages of 15 and 17) will be accompanied by chaperones. The program will be intensive, academic, and highly interactive. The program sponsors seek energetic applicants who are ready to develop their skills in order to be effective leaders in their schools and communities. Adult participants in this program take on a unique role as a participant role model and as an active program participant. We expect the adult participants to be fully engaged in program activities while serving as a liaison between youth participants and program staff, should problems arise. Strong consideration will be given to adults with the ability to teach or communicate best practices gathered during the exchange in the subjects of Human Rights, Social Justice and Peace building.
